Name a time when it was a fall experience that made you feel golden. Name a fall experience you can conjure up right not.  For me, it was my first marriage to Paul. We got married on October 30th many years ago. It was a beautiful fall day in Chicago. We had the wedding in the trendy near North Side at St. Clement’s Church. Then we had a great big reception out around O’Hare airport.

We had a live band, and Paul paid them extra so we could stay dancing. So many of the young people stayed late. It was a beautiful wedding. There were lots of our family, friends, and music.

I close my eyes. I remember the newness of this experience.  I remember the innocence. I remember I had no idea what my future held. This feeling inside of me is happiness, brilliance, beauty and success. When I tap on that moment I have no idea that Paul, and I would have three children or that we’d move away from all of our family support from the Chicago suburbs to Seattle.

I had no idea that moving away from family would cause a great deal of tension between Paul and myself because there was no family around. I tried to be a stay-at-home mom and do my occupational therapy on-the-side and run a developmental toy catalog at home. Finances were tight.

Ultimately we divorced. However, we have remained friends, and his family is still family. Family changes and if we’re lucky, family adapts to the constant changes the world presents us.

People who know the story remark that it’s unusual for couples to work through their anger issues around each other when they are no longer married. We did this for the children, and we did this for our friendship. We did the work it takes to let go and heal.

How amazing many years later when our oldest daughter gave birth to our first grandson he was born on the same date that Paul and I were married.

Xavier’s birth almost three years ago made me understand that life is a gift and even the bitter sweet moments can be happy and golden. This is a remarkable story I want to keep in a book because I want my family and future generations to know about these stories.

So today, What is something golden from the fall that you can tell in a story?
